Amy Winehouse

Wild child of pop whose smoky, sensual voice was overwhelmed in her descent to self-destruction.

Amy Winehouse, who was found dead on Saturday aged 27, ticked all the right boxes for a self-destructive wild child of pop, having bags of "attitude", a drink and drugs problem and a no-good man; yet underneath the ratty beehive hairdo, oversized plastic earrings, kohl-encrusted eyes and tattoo-covered arms, she was also an addictive and engaging performer with a natural contralto voice who sang with jazzy, passionate energy.

But Amy Winehouse's music - Sixties pop-soul in 21st-century street slang - was often less interesting than her chaotic offstage life. Her name seldom featured in the press unless prefixed by the word "troubled" and accompanied by an account of her battles with drink and drugs and her dependent-abusive relationship with her husband, a petty drug dealer and junkie called Blake Fielder-Civil.

Cancelled gigs, brushes with the law and spells in rehab gave the press plenty to write about; commentators saw parallels between Amy Winehouse's charge towards self-destruction with Blake Fielder-Civil and their punk rock counterparts Nancy Spungeon and Sid Vicious.

Her rake's progress began when, aged 16, she dropped out of school and sang with a jazz band. By 18 she had signed a deal with Island Records and had moved out of her mother's home into a flat in Camden, north London. Her first record, Frank, released in 2003, brought nominations for a host of awards including the Mercury Music Prize. She won a Novello award the following year for her first single, Stronger Than Me.

But in 2005 she met Blake Fielder-Civil in a Camden pub. A "music video assistant", he was already in a relationship, but they began an affair. He had her name tattooed behind his right ear, and she had his tattooed over her heart. They also had matching scars on their arms (inflicted, so it was said, at Fielder-Civil's "self-harm parties").

When they met, by Amy Winehouse's own admission, she smoked cannabis and drank more than was good for her. But as their relationship developed she became notorious for drunken public appearances, including one time when she ran offstage during a performance to vomit. At the Q Awards in 2006 she heckled Bono during his acceptance speech with: "Shut up! I don't give a f—!"

From the story her songs told, in a voice that was big, smoky and sensual, her relationship with Fielder-Civil (whom she called "Baby") burned too hot. After about a year, he went back to his old girlfriend and in the months they were apart Amy Winehouse sank into depression, out of which emerged Back to Black, an album of heartbroken songs that won her a Mercury Award and sold more than a million copies in the U.K..

She made history in America when the album entered the charts at No 7, the highest position ever for a British female artist. In February 2007 she won a Brit Award for Best British Female.

Fans seemed to connect with the authenticity of Amy Winehouse's suffering, though her hit single Rehab (2006), a song about her past refusal to attend an alcohol rehabilitation centre struck a more ominous note. By September 2006, she was reported to have dropped three dress sizes and there was speculation as to whether drugs or an eating disorder were to blame.

By April 2007 her relationship with Fielder-Civil was back on, and in May, ignoring pleas from her family, they married in a pounds 60 ceremony in Miami, celebrating the occasion with burgers and chips and a 48-hour lock-in at their hotel.

Only then did Amy's partying start to get dangerously out of hand. On one occasion she woke with scratches on her arm and admitted: "I have no idea. I hate that. The blackouts. Happens too often." As her drug problem got worse, Amy Winehouse's performances became more and more shambolic.

At the Eden Project in Cornwall, she forgot her lyrics, hit herself in the face with her microphone and spat at her fans. At Glastonbury she staggered incoherently about the stage and was aggressively heckled by the crowd. Other concerts were cancelled at short notice, the singer being too ill to appear.

In August she and her husband went on a three-day bender fuelled by heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, the horse tranquilliser ketamine and alcohol. Amy's inevitable overdose led to a hospital visit, and after her stomach was pumped and an emergency adrenalin shot administered, she checked into a rehab centre in Essex. She and her husband stuck just three days of an eight-week course.

After pressure from her parents she and Fielder-Civil checked into rehab again only to quit once more within days, after being caught smoking crack cocaine. Within a few days they were reported to have collapsed after "speedballing" on a mixture of crack and heroin.

Then came a midnight rumpus in Soho when the two lashed out at each other in the street outside their hotel and were photographed, him bleeding from scratches on his face, she from her face and - bizarrely - feet, leading to suggestions she had injected drugs between her toes. The parents of both parties took to the airwaves to try to call a halt, with Fielder-Civil's stepfather demanding that Amy's record company intervene.

In October she was arrested while on tour in Bergen, Norway, and held by police overnight on suspicion of possessing drugs. In November Fielder-Civil was arrested and charged with assaulting a publican in the East End, but was subsequently sent to prison on remand on charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice after allegedly trying to bribe the man do drop the assault allegation.

Though her parents and friends hoped that her husband's incarceration would bring Amy Winehouse to her senses, it seemed, rather, to have the opposite effect. On November 14 she was booed in Birmingham during an incoherent performance which she dedicated to her husband. Subsequently she cancelled the remaining last eight gigs of a U.K. tour - on doctors' orders.

Amy Jade Winehouse was born on September 14 1983 to Jewish parents and grew up in Southgate, north London. Her parents, Janis, a pharmacist, and Mitch, a cab driver, split up when she was nine and she continued to live mostly with her mother.

Aged 12, she won a scholarship to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but poor exam results and general attitude problems led her mother to move her to the Mount in Mill Hill, an all-girls school which she hated. She ended up at the Brit Performing Arts and Technology School in Croydon.

It was at a relative's bar mitzvah in America when she was 13 that people started realizing what a wonderful voice she had. While still at school, she began to write songs and sing at weekends with jazz bands and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. When a friend in the music business, Nick Shymansky, heard her singing, he gave her studio time to record some demos. At 17, she landed a contract with Island Records.

In a moving interview, a former musical assistant who toured with Amy Winehouse recalled the talent he had seen in the lucid period before Fielder-Civil made his return into her life in 2007.

"Blake was off the scene, she had another boyfriend. She has enormous talent and deep roots in jazz and blues; she didn't suffer from the "lead singer syndrome" and unlike most she knew her sharps and flats. And she knew exactly who she was and how she wanted to sound - which some singers only know when they've got 40 grand's worth of equipment, but which Amy knew by standing on top of a piano in a pub."

In fact the other boyfriend, a chef and musician called Alex Claire, was only a marginal improvement on Fielder-Civil. During their much-publicized break up, Claire sold his story to the News Of The World which published it under the headline "Bondage Crazed Amy Just Can't Beehive in Bed".

By the summer of 2007, however, she was cancelling so many gigs that the celebrity magazine Heat took to running a regular feature called "Where's Wino?" the Sun's Bizarre column awarded her the nickname Amy Declinehouse.

Pathetically, Amy Winehouse's hopes for her life with Blake Fielder-Civil seemed touchingly conventional and domestic. "I've always been a little homemaker," she told an interviewer. "I know I'm talented, but I wasn't put here to sing. I was put here to be a wife and a mum and to look after my family. I love what I do, but it's not where it begins and ends."

In late 2007 Amy Winehouse's father Mitch was reported to have taken the precaution of writing her obituary, fearful that the end could not be far away.

Last month she pulled out of a European comeback tour after she was jeered at the first gig in Belgrade for appearing too drunk to perform. For 90 minutes, she mumbled through fragments of songs and at times left the stage - leaving her band to fill in. It turned out to be her final concert.

The Daily Telegraph rock critic, Neil McCormick, said she had appeared focused when giving an "incredible performance" for a recent studio recording of a duet with Tony Bennett.

After the pair recorded the jazz standard Body And Soul, Bennett said any misgivings he may have harboured about working with Amy Winehouse evaporated when he mentioned her admiration for the jazz singer Dinah Washington.

"The minute she heard that, her eyes popped wide open and completely inspired she said 'You know that I like Dinah Washington?' I said 'She was a friend of mine.' She was all excited that I knew Dinah Washington and that was the main inspiration. And from that moment on, the record came out just beautiful." The 17-track Duets II is due for release in September.

Friends and family among mourners at Amy Winehouse funeral

London (CNN) -- Record producer Mark Ronson, who worked with Amy Winehouse on her Grammy-winning album "Back to Black," was among the mourners arriving Tuesday at the singer's funeral, according to CNN affiliate ITV.

But the singer's ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, was not released from prison to attend the memorial, a source familiar with the situation said. He is serving a 32-month sentence for burglary and possession of an imitation firearm, according to media reports.
Sparse details are being released about the ceremony -- including exactly when and where it will occur -- though Winehouse spokesman Chris Goodman said "it will be a small, private event for a few friends and family."
Investigators might not know what killed Winehouse until they get results from lab tests on her blood and tissue, due in two to four weeks, according to London's Metropolitan Police, also known as Scotland Yard.
An autopsy was completed at St. Pancras Mortuary on Monday afternoon, two days after the singer was found dead in her London apartment.
"It did not establish a formal cause of death and we await the results of further toxicology tests," a police statement said.
An inquest into her death was opened Monday, the statement said.
"Inquiries continue into the circumstances of the death," Scotland Yard said in a statement Sunday. At this stage, the death of 27 year old "is being treated as unexplained and there have been no arrests in connection with the incident," police said.
The singer, beloved for her talent but infamous for erratic public behavior, arrests and drug problems, was found dead Saturday.
Winehouse's family said in a statement Sunday it "has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives. We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time."
"We are trying to come to terms with the death of a dear friend and colleague, the most amazing artist and talent," her management company, Metropolis Music, said Sunday. "We will always remember Amy as a vibrant, funny, caring young woman who made everyone around her feel welcome. We have lost a very special person, part of our family."
Winehouse's soulful, throaty vocals brought the British musician stardom in 2007, but her troubled off-stage life -- chronicled in her Top 10 hit "Rehab" -- won her notoriety. Her death came less than two months after her latest release from a rehabilitation program and weeks after she was booed offstage by disappointed fans in Belgrade, Serbia.
Winehouse died at the same age as at least four other music legends. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison each died of drug overdoses when they were 27. Kurt Cobain was 27 when he committed suicide, soon after his release from rehab.
Police were called to Winehouse's Camden Square apartment just after 4 p.m. Saturday in response to a report of "a woman found deceased," authorities said.
"Everyone who is involved with Amy is shocked and devastated," Goodman said. "Our thoughts are with her family and friends."
Winehouse's official website carried nothing but a black-and-white photo of the singer.
Her song "Rehab," in which she sang "They tried to make me go to rehab, I said no, no, no," helped form the public's view of Winehouse. She told CNN in a 2007 interview, "I don't care enough about what people think of me to conform to anything."
The London-born singer was a tattooed teenage rebel after she was expelled from a prestigious performing arts school. Her first album, "Frank," debuted in 2003, when the singer-songwriter was 19.
International success came with her 2007 album "Back to Black." She dominated the 2008 Grammys, winning five awards that night and delivering, via satellite from London, a strong performance of "Rehab."
Winehouse's volatile marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil took a toll on the singer's career. The couple divorced in 2009 after a stormy two years filled by drug addiction and arrests.
Winehouse's parents went public with their efforts to help their daughter, telling the London Telegraph in 2009 that she was on the road to recovery.
"A gradual recovery, which is good," Winehouse's father told the Telegraph. "With slight backward steps -- not drug backward steps, more drink backward steps if you follow my drift. I think that will be the pattern of recovery."
The organization that awards the Grammys issued a statement Saturday calling Winehouse "a dynamic performer and musician who seamlessly blended rock, jazz, pop, and soul and created a sound all her own."
"Her rich, soulful and unique voice reflected her honest songwriting and earned her a devoted fan following, critical acclaim, and the genuine respect and admiration of her musical peers," the Recording Academy statement said. "She will forever be remembered for her immense talent, and her music will live on for generations to come. Our deepest sympathies go out to her family, friends, and fans during this difficult time."
CNN's Bharati Naik, Denise Quan and Alan Duke contributed to this report.

Amy Winehouse Wrapping Up New Album

Her new album is due sometime this year.

Amy Winehouse has been working on her follow up to the 2004, 5 time Grammy winning Black to Black. She has been recording the new album in the Caribbean and in the UK.

When asked about the whereabouts of her new album, she said, "The album will be six months at the most, it's going to be very much the same as my second album, where there's a lot of jukebox stuff... I just can't wait to have some new songs [to perform] on stage."

Winehouse has been criticized for a recent performance where she forgot the words of the song. She has also been accused of performing under the influence during some live shows and televised appearance. But Winehouse explained, "Mark and I recorded two versions of Valerie," Winehouse later explained. "We released the one that came out like the Supremes but I play the other version with my band. When I got there I completely forgot it was his version we were singing so I was probably a bit out of sync."

Are Amy And Blake No More?

The marriage is off...

16:41, Monday, 10 May 2010

Amy Winehouse has had some recent times, as we know, but now things have gone from bad to worse for the Valerie hit-maker. Reports claim that Amy’s ex-husband Blake Fielder Civil has apparently called off their second wedding.

The couple got divorced in July 2009 but the couple then reunited and Blake revealed earlier this year that they were planning to walk down the aisle one more time, but not anymore.

Some new photos were published a few days ago of Winehouse allegedly getting a bit too close with a neighbour in the garden of her London home.

A source told The Daily Star: "Blake had his suspicions about the neighbour so when the pictures emerged of them together he confronted her. He's now in absolute bits. He thought that this time it was going to be forever but now he's convinced himself that she's up to no good and he's moved back up to Sheffield.”

They added: "They had a massive row before he left and she did little to reassure him that their relationship would be okay. He was due to move into her new house and they were serious about having a baby. Amy's been ringing him but he's stopped answering. He just can't get the image of her cheating out of his head."

Amy Winehouse Claims She's Got a Bug up Her Ass

Amy Winehouse has stated that the courts have planted a bug up her ass, according to a lady who sat next to her on the New York Subway Friday.

"We were just sitting there on our way uptown when this lady with a strange hairdo and sort of wild look in her eyes told me she had a bug up her ass," Mrs Milo Waterhouse of Queens, told me.

"You see all kinds on the subway", she added, "but she was a hoot."

"Did you know who it was?"

"No. I still don't. There are so many here like that in New York. She got on right after I did and came and sat down real gingerly. Then she went into this longass story about a trial date she had coming up about her hitting someone and I'm thinking, 'I hope she doesn't hit me' so I just nodded my head like I always do, and gave her a kind smile.

"She then went on and on about the Police in Britain and DC with all these secret microphones really small but I refused when she told me to scream into her ass so it would cause the listener to go deaf."

"Why don't you just cut a big fart?', I asked and she said she tried but the bug kept her cheeks too far apart. I had to turn my head and laugh.

"Winehouse then reportedly wanted to show Waterhouse her ass to see if the FBI had planted "a bug up her wazzo!" because it had felt odd for days.

Then, according to Waterhouse, she claimed they might be related because of their last names, Winehouse and Waterhouse.

Mrs. Waterhouse said she told her they could be and tried to be nice.

"I couldn't help asking her about the fact that she might have been probed by aliens", laughed Waterhouse. "I'm an old fart, you know that?"

Amy Winehouse: The Worst Dressed Female Celebrity

Lakeside Shopping Centre, in Thurrock, Essex has conducted an interesting poll recently. In accordance to the poll, Amy Winehouse has been named the worst dressed female celebrity! The poll has also revealed that showing off a flabby midriff is considered the most shocking offence among six out of 10 Britons.

Amy Winehouse topped the worst dressed poll for her dishevelled 1950s style. Jodie Marsh and Peaches Geldof were in second and third places respectively. Shell–suits tucked into socks, G–strings showing, head–to–toe animal prints, muffin tops, black shoes with white socks and the mullet haircut are all on the list of what not to wear.
With his pseudo–Victorian garb, Russell Brand has been picked as the worst dressed male, followed closely by Michael Jackson
, Simon Cowell and Mickey Rourke. When it comes to crimes against fashion, we've all been guilty of the odd misdemeanour – but there's no excuse for sloppy dressing. The poll has also unearthed fashion skeletons of more than 1,000 Britons. Shell–suits emerged as the most disastrous item for men, while puffball skirts topped the poll of closet catastrophes for women, just ahead of shoulder pads.

Amy Winehouse Burned

This chick loves the gross pics...

Photos have been circulating of Amy Winehouse sporting a very weird patch of pink skin on her leg. Sources have revealed that the patch is the result of a burn she received while cooking pasta. Check it out below. Amy reportedly spilled boiling water on her leg while making dinner for friends.

A source said: "Amy's burns looked so painful - she should really get them looked at. They were covered in sand."

A spokesman said: "She's not in a lot of pain, she's just letting it breathe."

Meanwhile, heroin addict Gilleen Morris is claiming she is pregnant with Amy's estranged husband's baby.

Amy Winehouse: Headed Back to the Caribbean

Amy Winehouse's legal problems may have her banned in the USA right now, so what's a gal to do?

Head for the Caribbean.

It was announced earlier today that Winehouse is going to headline the 18th Annual St. Lucia Jazz festival in May. She had to drop out of next month's Coachella music festival in the California desert because she's unable to obtain a work visa in time due to lingering assault charges she's facing in the U.K.

Sen. Allen Chastanet, St. Lucia's Minister of Tourism, tells me talks with Winehouse began during her recent two-month vacation on the small island nation.

"When she was in St. Lucia, it really was a positive influence on her," Chastanet tells me. "She had a really great time."

Winehouse will perform May 8 with KC and the Sunshine Band opening for her. About 6,000 people per night are expected to attend the festival, which runs from May 2 to 10. Others on the bill include Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Chicago and Michael McDonald.

Winehouse will be put up at the new $100 million Tides Sugar Beach resort.

"She's welcome to stay as long as she wants to," Chastanet says. "We enjoy having her there. I wish we had recording facilities for her. I know she was trying very hard to record her album down there. That is something the government is working on down the road."

Chastanet insists he's confident Winehouse will honor her commitment. "What's very nice about the whole thing is we spoke to her and we spoke to her management and she really wants to do this to say thank-you to St. Lucia," he said. "I think this is something that she legitimately wants to do. So on that basis, I'm really not nervous."

We're rootin' for you, St. Lucia!
